PMComplete™ First Software to Check for PMI® Practice Standard for Scheduling Conformance
Overview
PMComplete Pty Ltd released a version of its flagship product PMComplete™ on 26th July, 2006 that will analyse and measure a project's schedule and report on its conformance with the draft PMI® Practice Standard for Scheduling released on 13th July, 2006.
The speed with which PMComplete Pty Ltd was able to implement this is not all that remarkable because staff at PMComplete Pty Ltd are experts in the scheduling field coupled with the pre-exisiting PMComplete™ Schedule Analysis report that had many of the requirements previously built into it.
Details
System Users simply import their schedules into PMComplete™ from Microsoft® Project and then invoke the Project's Schedule Analysis report. Options on this report allow for analysing template schedules, in-planning phase schedules and in-progress schedules. These differences allow for the fact that templates and in-planning phase schedules should not have actuals and baselines. A nicely formatted report listing all non-conformances is produced that allows Schedulers to immediately revise their schedules.
The Schedule Analysis report is for those people who are serious about their schedules and don't just want to "draw pretty bar charts" with Microsoft® Project. This report assists Project Managers and Schedulers to get their schedules into shape.
From a PMO perspective, this report can be used to quickly assess the mechanical aspects of a schedule, thus freeing up time to concentrate on the project logic that should be expressed in the schedule, thereby improving schedule quality.
Many additional checks over and above those mandated by the PMI® Practice Standard for Scheduling can also be performed. Many of these have been implemented to detect poor usage of Microsoft® Project (eg, Milestone and Summary tasks with resources assigned). Various options exist for tailoring the checks that will be performed on the schedule.
Over 45 different checks are performed on the schedule as a whole, over 45 are performed on each task with many more being performed on each resource and the calendar. These checks are much more sophisticated than the ones that are performed by the debug macros that we distribute at our "Advanced Project Scheduling Using Microsoft Project" training course. Specific conformance metrics are also kept.
